About this policy
This policy explains what cookies are, which ones my website uses, and how you can control them. It sits alongside my Privacy Policy which explains how I handle personal data more generally.
If anything is unclear, please email me at emma@emmaheptonstall.com.
What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your device when you visit. Cookies allow a site to remember things about your visit, such as your preferences or whether you have logged in. Some cookies are essential for the website to work. Others help me understand how the site is being used so I can improve it.
Cookies are either:
- Session cookies, which are stored only during your visit and deleted when you close your browser
- Persistent cookies, which remain on your device until they expire or you delete them
Cookies can be set by my website directly (first-party cookies) or by services I use that are based on other websites (third-party cookies).
How I use cookies
My website uses two types of cookies: strictly necessary cookies that are always on, and analytics cookies that only run if you give consent.
When you first visit my site, you will see a consent banner with equally prominent options to accept or decline analytics cookies. You can change your mind at any time by clicking the cookie settings link in the website footer. Withdrawing consent is as straightforward as giving it.
Cookies my website uses
Strictly necessary cookies (always on)
These cookies are essential for the website to function and to keep your visit secure. They do not track you across other websites and do not collect data for marketing purposes. Because they are essential, consent is not required.

Analytics cookies (consent required)
These cookies are switched off by default and only run if you accept analytics cookies in the banner. They help me understand how visitors use the site so I can improve it. Google Analytics uses cookies to collect information including your IP address and browsing behaviour on this site; this data is used in aggregated form to analyse site usage.

Google Analytics is provided by Google, which transfers data to the United States. Google relies on the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework as the safeguard for this transfer.
What I do not use
I want to be clear about what is not running on my site:
- I do not use a Facebook or Meta pixel
- I do not use ActiveCampaign site tracking
- I do not use marketing or advertising cookies
- I do not use behavioural profiling or remarketing cookies
- I do not use WooCommerce or any e-commerce tracking on this site
- I do not sell or share your browsing data
How to manage cookies
Through my cookie banner
You can accept or decline analytics cookies when you first visit. To change your choice later, click the cookie settings link in the footer of any page. Accepting and declining are presented as equally accessible options.
Through your browser
You can also set your browser to refuse some or all cookies. Most browsers let you do this in the settings or preferences menu. Be aware that disabling strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the site from working properly.
Guidance for common browsers:
